The procedure

Your child will lie on their left side to image the right hip joint and will then be turned onto the right side to image the left hip joint.


Background Information

These scans a re used to look at the maturity of the hip joints in infants up to 1 year old. If an immature hip is diagnosed a timely referral to the paediatric orthopaedic surgeon is made for clinical management of this condition.


The procedure (over 1year old for limping / pain)

Your child will lie on their back and both hips are examined


Background information

Ultrasound is also used to check for any hip joint effusions (fluid) with the joint if the child is limping and no abnormality has been demonstrated on the x-rays.
