In my first week in the new role, I’ve deliberately taken some time out to visit areas of the Trust that I’m less familiar with as I really want to broaden my knowledge of all our services. On Tuesday I had a really great visit to Sterile Services where I was hosted by Shalini Kumar and Paul Fey.

I didn’t know much about the department before, but was really impressed by what I saw. Making sure clinical equipment is appropriately sterilised and transported back to where it needs to be in a timely way is crucial to the way our hospitals work, and has a direct impact on the care we are able to give patients. I was particularly impressed by the way Shalini and Paul are working to develop their team, especially around professional development, and the pride the whole team has in their service really shone through. I was very impressed and grateful to the team for taking the time to show me around.

It made me think about how there are lots of opportunities for us to celebrate and be proud of Team ASPH, our hospitals and the great care we give to patients. One of these is through the Staff Friends and Family test that has recently been introduced. I am sure you are familiar with how this works – would you be happy for your mum, dad, sister, daughter, son, neighbour to be treated by you and your colleagues, and would you recommend the Trust as a place to work?

As a nurse I was heartened to see the results from the first survey a few months ago where staff had endorsed Ashford and St Peter’s as a place to be treated. Delivering great patient care is our business, that’s what we’re all here to do. Our results in terms of how people feel about working at the Trust however continue to be mediocre and I’m a bit baffled by this. As I walk around our hospitals I meet dozens of colleagues who show huge commitment, respect and enjoyment for their job, their team members and our patients; but for some reason this is rarely reflected in our more formal feedback mechanisms.

Have a great bank holiday weekend and to those of the team who will be working, many thanks.
