Depending on what is required, a patient may be seen by either an orthotist or the orthotic technician who will ensure that, for the condition being treated, the correct appliance is issued.

The following is a list of other appliances issued by the Surgical Appliance Department with an indication of the frequency at which these may be changed:

 

Adults

  • Corset – up to two annually
  • Truss – up to two annually
  • AFO (ankle/foot orthosis)– one on the first visit and a second as appropriate
  • Cervical collar – up to two annually
  • Knee brace – one per annum as appropriate
  • Wig – Alopecia patients will be supplied with two wigs initially and then two annually as required. Other patients will receive one annually as required.
  • Other items – will be supplied by arrangement with the orthotist or orthotic technician.

 

Children (Paediatrics)

  • AFO – to be reviewed as required.
  • KAFO (knee/ankle/foot orthosis)– as required
  • Helmets – up to two per annum.
  • Other items – will be supplied by arrangement with the orthotist or orthotic technician.

 

Some of the items listed above are subject to a prescription charge. Prescription charges are reviewed annually in April. Please see the prescription charge section for more details.
