Depending on what is required, a patient may be seen by either an orthotist or the orthotic technician who will ensure that, for the condition being treated, the correct appliance is issued.
The following is a list of other appliances issued by the Surgical Appliance Department with an indication of the frequency at which these may be changed:
Adults
- Corset – up to two annually
- Truss – up to two annually
- AFO (ankle/foot orthosis)– one on the first visit and a second as appropriate
- Cervical collar – up to two annually
- Knee brace – one per annum as appropriate
- Wig – Alopecia patients will be supplied with two wigs initially and then two annually as required. Other patients will receive one annually as required.
- Other items – will be supplied by arrangement with the orthotist or orthotic technician.
Children (Paediatrics)
- AFO – to be reviewed as required.
- KAFO (knee/ankle/foot orthosis)– as required
- Helmets – up to two per annum.
- Other items – will be supplied by arrangement with the orthotist or orthotic technician.
Some of the items listed above are subject to a prescription charge. Prescription charges are reviewed annually in April. Please see the prescription charge section for more details.
All items listed above are subject to wear and tear and, therefore, some variations to the above criteria may occur. If you are in doubt, please contact the surgical appliance office for details.
