As a Safe, Effective Quality Occupational Health accredited service, we provide all employees with access to an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) should they require it. The EAP is managed by an external company and is completely confidential and free for the employee to use. Services provided by the EAP include face to face counselling, on line Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and advice on legal and monetary matters. For more information please click here.

Workforce and Organisational development has a well-developed set of policies and benefits to staff. Ashford and St Peter’s have, through its innovations program, invested in a dedicated staff physiotherapy service. The Manual Handling team have also joined Occupational Health to enable a more cohesive and proactive approach to monitor and support the management of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace and ensure robust risk assessment and training. The Trust also provides a substantive full time Health and Safety Advisor for advice relating to safety.

Wellbeing: is the subjective state of being healthy, happy, contented, comfortable and satisfied with one’s quality of life. It includes physical, material, social, emotional (‘happiness’), and development & activity dimensions (Felce & Perry 1995; Danna & Griffin 1999; Diener 2000)


Providing a safe environment for our staff to work in and helping them to have a healthy life is a crucial element in Ashford & St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH). Staff Health, Safety and Wellbeing promotion is a banner that unifies approaches to improve morale, efficiency, physical, mental and social contentment for staff. Although there are many possible aspects that could be included, for Ashford & St. Peter’s the following are deemed to be the key aspects:

  • Prompt rehabilitation
  • Improve Staff Wellbeing – Active Healthy Lifestyles
  • Health Promotion


The Trust has worked toward these ends through the provision of Occupational Health Services, Health and Safety training, flexible working and employee assistance programmes. It builds on Health Safety legislation and guidance from the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD); the Department of Health (DH); the Health and Safety Executive (HSE); NHS Employers, and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).


For staff who are supporting colleagues or direct reports who may be experiencing mental health difficulties we have a guide available on our intranet.

Employees can ask to have an appointment with Occupational Health (called ‘a self referral’) at any time if they feel that their health may be affecting their work or work is affecting health. You do not need to ask your manager / they do not need to refer you.

This is an appointment to provide information, support and advice and we do not normally write to your manager following the appointments, and not without your agreement.
