Letter from the Chairman
Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of our Foundation Trust.
We take pleasure in providing you with a vision of our organisation and how we perceive the Non-Executive Director - designate position being a significant strength within Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in delivering our mission to ensure the provision of high quality, sustainable healthcare services to the community we serve. Our vision is to be one of the best healthcare Trusts in the country.
This is an exciting time to join the Board at Ashford and St Peter’s. This has, and continues to be, a challenging period for the NHS with Covid-19 and the demand for our services is progressively increasing while the funding position is ever more stretched. However, Covid-19 has also provided a platform for change and innovation and we believe Ashford & St Peter’s has met these challenges both in terms of financial and clinical stability.
We achieved a significant turning point at the end of 2019 by securing the funding needed to invest in our buildings and services through land sales. This has and continues to enable the Trust to make fantastic changes to improve care for our local people, through new urgent and emergency facilities, better car parking and new digital services.
The Board has an excellent track record in delivering performance and enjoys supportive relationships with the Trust’s Council of Governors who represent the interests of the public, staff and stakeholders within the Trust. We are part of the Surrey Heartlands partnership of local health and care organisations; we’re all working together – doctors, nurses, other clinicians and staff – in partnership with local residents and patients to improve health and care services for local people.
We’ve celebrated a number of achievements with our talented workforce (Team ASPH). Following an inspection in July 2018, we were pleased to retain our CQC good rating, with the Critical Care Unit at St Peter’s Hospital achieving an ‘Outstanding’ rating overall. In 2019 the Trust was shortlisted for the Comparative Health Knowledge System (CHKS) national healthcare efficiency award and the Trust was awarded up to £1.5 Million for a ground-breaking COVID-19 clinical trial. In December 2019 the Trust signed a 10-year contract with Cerner Limited to implement their electronic patient record run jointly with Royal Surrey Foundation Trust with the overall aim to make our safe hospital safer for staff to provide care. In March 2020, we won the award for ‘Collaborative Recruitment of the Armed Forces Community’ at the first ‘Step into Health’ awards.
We wish to appoint a Non-Executive Director – designate with a financial background to provide succession planning for our current Non-Executive Director who leaves in April 2022 and is the chair of our Modern Healthcare Committee (financial sub-committee of the Board). We are seeking someone with a strong financial background and with a recognised financial/accountancy qualification to continue in this role. We aim to provide a period of overlap to ensure a robust period of handover and assurance.
We are seeking an exceptional individual with a proven track record of experience and skills from working in a financial role at Board level, in a large, complex organisation, and you will be expected to have had experience of leading within a governance structure.
You can play an essential role in our future success, working closely with the Board, bringing independence, external skills and perspectives, and challenge to financial and strategy development. You will share a corporate responsibility for the governance and performance of the Trust in meeting both strategic and operational objectives. You will actively support and promote a positive culture for the Trust in line with our Values and will share the responsibility to act in the best interests of the public and communities we serve.
We have a preference for local candidates who have a commitment to supporting the local health economy but welcome applicants from neighbouring counties or London who would provide a complementary perspective.

We anticipate conducting the recruitment and selection process while maintaining social-distancing guidelines and we have successfully held meetings and interview panels by virtual meetings. We are planning to conduct this recruitment campaign through a combination of virtual meetings and face to face interviews. At present our Non-Executive Directors are mainly working remotely during present response to Covid, however, we are resuming on site activities and ensuring we do this safely.
