The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Paediatric teams at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals were delighted to be shortlisted for three awards in this year’s Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) Paediatric Awards for Training Achievements (PAFTAs). One member of the team also took home the award for the category they were shortlisted in.

The NICU was shortlisted for the Best Training Unit in Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery award. The reason for their nominated was quoted as “By far the best unit in town! Excellent team, progressive and forward thinking - not afraid to take risks and really invest in their trainees. Great people to work with and you feel heard as a trainee.''

Consultant Neonatologists Dr Sherif Dabbour (Deputy College Tutor) and Dr Vennila Ponnusamy (Neonatal Speciality Lead), were also shortlisted for the Best Educational Supervisors Award.

Dr Ellie Day, Consultant Paediatrician, (College Tutor and HEKSS Training Programme Director for Paediatrics) was awarded the PAFTA for Best Educational Supervisor for KSS School of Paediatrics. Dr Day’s name has now been put forward for the National PAFTAS overseen by the College.

The PAFTAs are overseen by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) and are a celebration of training excellence across the region. They recognise remarkable achievements and bring together the people that have made it all happen.

The PAFTA process has two parts:

  • The regional PAFTA process is run by deaneries / schools and anyone from that region can nominate someone for any of the categories available in their region.
  • The national PAFTA process is run by RCPCH and accepts applications of regional winners only.

Trainees in the KSS School of Paediatrics were invited to nominate for a range of categories by the KSS Paediatric Trainees Committee and these were then anonymised and voted for. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.

Dr Sam Edwards, Divisional Director for Women’s Health and Paediatrics and Consultant Neonatologist, said: “We are so proud of the team for their commitment to providing excellent educational support and guidance to all of the trainees in their units and for promoting a positive attitude within the workplace. These nominations and award are a real testament to the efforts and dedication of both teams.”
