Bereavement Cafe

Last month St Peter’s Hospital launched their first Bereavement Café where families and friends who have lost a loved one can meet up once a week to chat over coffee.

Trained by Princess Alice Hospice, fourteen volunteers provide a much-needed support service for those finding it hard to cope after the death of a loved one. Friends and families may find it helpful to talk with someone about what they are going through, and the feelings they are experiencing.

The Bereavement Café volunteers meet up every Tuesday at Chertsey House in meeting room 2/3 and provide a sanctuary for those struggling with their own grief or those who want to find out how to support someone close to them.

Elizabeth Lee, Chaplain said: “I was acutely aware that families and friends who lose a friend or loved one don’t always have a support network to help them cope with their grief. The Bereavement Café offers friendship, advice, guidance, and the opportunity to meet others who are going through a similar situation.”

Julie Smith, Chief Executive of Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals said: “We recognise how hard it is to cope after the death of a loved one. Here at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, we feel that some of the most meaningful support you may experience when you have been bereaved, is through connecting with others who have had similar experiences.”
