The Trust’s Colorectal team hosted the 11th Winter Colorectal day at St Peter’s on Friday 9 December. This international inspiring conference was supported by the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) Coloproctology Section, the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland and Colorectal Disease Journal.
The conference was attended by more than 100 consultants, trainees, nurse specialists, physiologists and physiotherapists from the Trust and across the UK. Mr Philip Bearn and Mr Pasha Nisar from ASPH opened the conference and the day started with trainees presenting their Colorectal research projects in a session chaired by Miss Alison Hainsworth (Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital) and Mr Prateesh Trivedi (ASPH).
This was followed by a variety of presentations from leading consultants sharing their thought leadership programmes and latest developments in Colorectal research and Endoscopy.

Professor Sebastiano Biondo, Professor of Surgery, Chief of Department flew in especially from Bellvitge University Hospital, University of Barcelona and presented the Colorectal lecture – Rectal Cancer - Is Europe Ahead of the Game? A thought-provoking lecture on the future of colorectal cancer.
Professor Biondo said, “I was honoured to be invited to speak at this ASPH conference which gives surgeons across the world a platform to share the latest thought leadership on colorectal and endoscopy research.”
After lunch, Professor Neil Smart from Exeter and Miss Shirley Chan from the Medway Maritime Hospital chaired the latest work from Endoscopy surgeons. The afternoon ended with an awards presentation for the Colorectal Trainee research projects.
