Can I get stronger without going to the gym?

The idea of pumping iron at the gym can be intimidating, especially as we get older. But as we get older we tend to lose muscle, so doing resistance exercise to maintain it becomes even more important. So, is there a way to maintain our muscle without going to the gym?
