Demand and resilience

In last week’s message I touched on how busy our hospitals are and continue to be and I would like to share some of the work I am focused on with colleagues and partner organisations to relieve the pressure. Whilst many of you are quite rightly focused on the pathways and processes inside our hospitals, I have been spending time looking at the pathways into and out of our hospitals to maintain flow.

Championing our diversity

As part of my overall approach in creating the right culture for our hospitals, I have been reflecting on the importance equality and diversity plays within our organisation.

To that end I have decided to continue to chair the Equality and Diversity Steering Group, as Andrew did, and to re-invigorate the group which met for the first time since I have been in post earlier this week.

Testing our preparedness

As I’ve been walking around our hospitals this week, a couple of times late into the evening, I’ve been able to talk to a number of you about the difficulties we are currently experiencing and although we’ve been under tremendous pressure, I am continually impressed with the mature and capable way team ASPH is responding.

I know there are many of you working tirelessly to keep our patients safe during some quite dramatic peaks in demand, and we need to find a collective way of managing this and supporting you, particularly as we approach winter. I recognise that saying thank you is not really enough and my executive colleagues and I are working hard with the CCG and our other partners to secure the right support so we can manage this situation as a whole system and alleviate some of the specific pressures on our hospitals.

Working as a team when under pressure

At the beginning of this week, I held my first round of consultant one to ones, which were an opportunity to start having some in depth conversations.

Chief Executive's Message

On a regular basis, our Chief Executive sends a message to staff about events at the hospitals, special achievements, and plans for the future.

We shall be adding them to this section as well as including them on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

From time to time, we shall ask other members of the Trust Board and clinical team to give their perspective on the week in our hospitals.
