Minimising Footfall and Mitigating Risk

Dr David Fluck

Dr David Fluck
Acting Chief Executive

I have been appointed Acting Chief Executive by the Board and feel proud to once again step into this role. As is always the case I will be more than able supported by my executive colleagues and senior leadership team and our priority remains your safety and wellbeing.

Last week Suzanne described the work we are doing as we move into the next stage of the COVID-19 pandemic to restore and recover services. She described our new "North Star" objective to "end health and care acquired infections for the team, patients and the community we serve."

One key element of this is the way we organise services across the hospital sites to minimise footfall and mitigate risk and Suzanne explained that we are moving as much planned activity to Ashford Hospital as possible, whilst emergency activity will remain at St Peter's.

Our New North Star Objective

Suzanne Rankin

Suzanne Rankin
Chief Executive

As we move into the next stage of the COVID-19 pandemic I'd like to use my message to describe the approach we are going to take to restore and recover services.

Safety for you and patients remains our absolute priority and we have set a new 'North Star' objective within the 'Together we Care' strategy and outlined a new operating model for the Trust that seeks to:

"End health and care acquired infections for the team, patients and the community we serve."

The North Star (Polaris) is one of the easiest stars to locate at night. Once you know north, it is possible to identify all points of the compass and clearly understand your direction of travel.

The north-star objective provides just such a reference point for all of us. It gives a clear reference point to work towards and should help everyone understand the Trust’s overall direction of travel.

To achieve our north-star objective we will need to work together and learn from best practice across our organisation and beyond.

The wider leadership team have been working together to set in place this ambitious framework. Its achievement will require all of us all to live and breathe our values, particularly personal responsibility.

Recovery and Restoration of Services

James A Thomas

James A Thomas
Chief Operating Officer

As the number of patients with COVID-19 decline we have begun work around recovery and restoration of services, as described in Suzanne's recent messages.

We have also changed the bronze / silver / gold command structure we implemented at the start of the COVID-19 situation and as such, all COVID-19 news and the weekly update with numbers of COVID-19 patients, discharges etc. will go out through Ryalto and the bulletin and we have reinstated our usual Chief Executive's weekly message. Over the coming weeks we will share much more detail about the new operating model which sets a new objective for the Trust to end health and care acquired infections for the team, patients and the community we serve in order that we can deliver our mission to ensure the provision of high quality sustainable healthcare services. Fundamentally this is about creating a safe environment for you and for patients so we can reinstate services confidently and build on all the good work we've done. Staff testing will be an important element of this approach and as the policy becomes clearer we will share more detail about this (including the antibody test), social distancing measures across the hospital sites and a robust infection and prevention control policy to prevent hospital-acquired infection.

Virtual Team Talks

Suzanne Rankin

Suzanne Rankin
Chief Executive

As you will have seen, we are moving into the next phase of managing the COVID pandemic in addition to caring for non COVID patients and reinstating some of the services that have temporarily been on hold.

We are continuing to adapt ways of working to ensure that we can deliver the best possible care to patients as well as looking after ourselves and each other.

I spoke about a key area of focus being the wellbeing of you - Team ASPH, as we navigate these challenging times. With this in mind, I would like to be able to engage with as many of you as possible, to see how you are, and to answer any questions you may have about our strategy and plans for the upcoming months. To do this, we'll be setting up a number of virtual Team Talks, in the form of a Microsoft Teams meeting, starting next Thursday 21st May at 10am.

Chief Executive's Message

On a regular basis, our Chief Executive sends a message to staff about events at the hospitals, special achievements, and plans for the future.

We shall be adding them to this section as well as including them on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

From time to time, we shall ask other members of the Trust Board and clinical team to give their perspective on the week in our hospitals.
