The Clinical Assessment Unit (CAU) is a 28 bedded unit which consists of 6 bays - colour coded – sky blue, orange, turquoise, lilac, yellow and blue. Each bay has 6 beds. We have 4 side rooms. Sky blue and orange bay are the Rapid assessment medical unit (RAMU).

Each bay is allocated a trained nurse and a Healthcare assistant on a shift basis. The nurses work 12.5hr shift patterns. You are likely to encounter a number of different staff during your stay. Everyone who approaches you should be wearing a badge showing their name and job title and they should introduce themselves. If you are unsure of the identity of anyone you come into contact with, please ask.

Location

The unit is located on the first floor of the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre at St Peter's Hospital.

Nursing and medical students

We have students from all disciplines allocated to the Unit as part of their training and they are fully supervised by trained members of the nursing or medical team at all times. Medical students are attached to consultants’ teams. If you do not wish to be part of the training programme for the medical students, please tell the nursing staff when you are admitted, otherwise we appreciate your co-operation in helping us to train future doctors.
