As we send this out on Friday afternoon, colleagues across the Trust are still presenting their fantastic Dragons’ Den ideas. Now in our second year, I am delighted to report we have had the most amazing response. Last year we had 23 submissions. This year we have had almost 50. In fact we have had so many that we are still watching the presentations. Last year we were finished by lunchtime.

What an impressive range of suggestions! And there have been some really creative ways that the ideas have been presented. We’ve had singing from the pantomime team, dietitians Hope and Ed asking for us to shift a few pounds in their direction to pay for new digital scales, and physiotherapist Carley Allen making fellow dragon David Fluck stretch his artistic skills by drawing a knee joint on stage.

Today’s event got off to a great start. Local television presenter and fitness trainer, Annie Price, who has been cared for by Team ASPH in the past and gave birth to her son in our maternity unit, gave an inspirational presentation. As a baby she was badly burned and as a result has required on-going treatment throughout her life so she is familiar with hospitals. She told us how feeling safe and welcome as a patient is so important to her. ‘As a patient, just being looked at and being listened to makes all the difference’, said Annie. It was a great reminder about what really makes the difference to people and the impact of what we do.

Dragons’ Den is great fun but there is a serious side to it. It’s one way for us to make sure we continue to deliver our vision to provide an outstanding experience and best outcomes for patients and the team. We only invest our valuable Trust’s resources in Dragons’ Den ideas which will help us provide better services. Over the past few weeks we’ve been sharing the impact of some of the ideas from 2018. Over the next year we’ll be telling you more about your great ideas from this year’s Dragons’ Den.

Thank you to everyone who took part, whether you came up with an idea, made a pitch or supported your team.

Thank you to my fellow Dragons – David Fluck, Simon Marshall, Louise McKenzie, Tom Smerdon and Sue Tranka – and to Penny Walton, Laura Creaby and Heather Bixley for their hard work in organising this year’s Dragons’ Den.

With very best wishes,

James Thomas

Chief Executive's Message

On a regular basis, our Chief Executive sends a message to staff about events at the hospitals, special achievements, and plans for the future.

We shall be adding them to this section as well as including them on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

From time to time, we shall ask other members of the Trust Board and clinical team to give their perspective on the week in our hospitals.
