How many times have you said, ‘if only we could do this differently, patients would benefit?’ Or ‘if my department had this piece of equipment, I would be able to provide better care?’ With Dragons’ Den 2019, this is a chance for our staff to do something about it.

This year we have a pot of £30,000 to invest in small projects of up to £1,000 each to support our vision ‘to provide an outstanding experience and the best outcome for patients and team.’

I loved hearing all of the ideas last year. What a fantastically creative and innovative team we have at ASPH! In 2018 we had 27 shortlisted pitches. Some of you might know we are very competitive, so I would love to have even more innovative ideas from staff shortlisted this year.

For our 2019 Dragons’ Den we are delighted to be joined by local television presenter and fitness trainer Annie Price, who had her son here last year. Many of you will have seen her BBC documentary Tiredness, Tears and Tantrums about this experience a few weeks ago. You can see the trailer here.

Not only is it worthwhile, taking part in Dragon’s Den is great fun – both for colleagues pitching their ideas and for me, and my fellow Dragons. It wasn’t only the ideas that were so creative, the pitches were too. We had colleagues dressing up and using a range of equipment and props. We even had a rap!

As well as funding, all the successful pitches get the support from me or one of the executive team to put your idea into practice so you are not left on your own to implement your idea. You get help and encouragement.

An example was the portable wheelchair scales bid for by our dieticians and upper limb equipment for stroke rehabilitation. The Stroke Rehabilitation team pitched for a range of equipment including resistance bands, shoelace tie boards, and button practice boards and reported it is having a positive impact on both patients and the team.

Jenny Denman, Physiotherapy Team Leader for Stroke Rehabilitation, said the Dragons’ Den experience was so positive she is working on a bid for this year.

Chief Executive's Message

On a regular basis, our Chief Executive sends a message to staff about events at the hospitals, special achievements, and plans for the future.

We shall be adding them to this section as well as including them on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

From time to time, we shall ask other members of the Trust Board and clinical team to give their perspective on the week in our hospitals.
